You want adventure? This is Dunn Right Outfitters adventure. Our destination is Big Lake Abitibi, the lake with over 900 islands. Accessed by steel mountain road’s public boat launch and an approximate 15 kilometre snowmobile or SnoBears ride from your accommodation in Cochrane. You know how they say that part of the adventure is about getting to your destination? Well, this is a prime example. Once we hit the lake, we will run through an abundance of islands and vast openings with endless sightseeing. Really making it feel like you are off the beaten path, and stepping into wilderness.
One thing that will amaze you is the sheer size of Lake Abitibi. With more shoreline than some of our great lakes, you will never run out of places to fish. The lake is vast and you can be turned around quick. While heading to the fishing areas, you will weave in and out of islands and history. Abitibi Lake was once part of the fur trade route and its surroundings are still left mostly untouched. There’s a lot of colour to the water, which means fertility, and fertility means lots of fish. This lake is an absolute walleye factory and there are numerous ling, sauger and pike to be caught as well.
We recommend an overnight stay or two in Cochrane, Ontario to enjoy some of what the town has to offer. With many comfortable accommodations, affordable restaurants, and fantastic attractions; like the Polar Bear Habitat and the home of Ganuk, Henry, and Inukshuk. This is the only human care facility in the world dedicated solely to caring for polar bears that can’t survive in the wild. It covers seven hectares of natural sub-arctic habitat, including the world’s largest enclosed lake.
Next to the Habitat is the Vintage Snowmobile Museum. This place has close to 100 vintage snowmobiles on display and numerous historic photographs and memorabilia dating back to the 1950s.
Dunn Lake Cottage sleeps 11 persons and includes amenities like internet, satellite, flushing toilets, and full kitchen. Ready for a safe and good time.
Your guide will cook up a storm, on and off the ice. You definitely won't be going hungry on this trip!
Before we head out on our trip, we will plan a visit to the Polar Bear Habitat. An incredible facility and real treat to see polar bears up close.
